Summer Capsule Wardrobe Planning

It seems it has taken a worldwide pandemic to get me to write a blog post! But never mind, I'm back and have lots of things I want to write about over the coming weeks.

I have been thinking a lot about my upcoming summer makes, especially as occasions have been cancelled and plans have changed for everyone.

I have found recently that planning out my proposed makes has really helped me to sew things that work well together, rather than having items of clothing in my wardrobe that feel a little alien. I've also been sketching out my proposed makes, as it helps me to visualise how the pieces will go together.

The first make I have planned is for the Simple Sew Bloggers, it's the Sophia skirt in a beautiful viscose linen blend fabric from Minerva.

This fabric has a lot of different colours in it, so goes well with a variety of plain tops. The Sophia skirt is pleated, midi length and easy to wear. I am planning to pair it with some existing plain t-shirts that I already have, as well as some new makes.

I bought 2m of this modal jersey a while ago and I'm going to make 2 tops out of it. The ever-popular Adrienne Blouse from Friday Pattern Company and the Scarlett Blouse from Patty Doo. I only recently discovered Patty Doo patterns and they are only €3 and come with a video tutorial! Most are in German, but there are several in English too with dubbed videos.

Each pattern requires more than 1m of fabric, but I'm hoping with some clever cutting I can get these to work. I don't mind having shorter sleeves on the Scarlett so I'll cut the Adrienne first. Modal jersey is super soft and drapey, which is why I have chosen top patterns that need some drape and movement. These are both good wardrobe staples, and black tops are easy to pair with other items. These tops are more interesting than plain t-shirts, but are still comfy for wearing at home. Win win!

I've also just ordered this jumper from Joules, so am planning some comfy trousers to go with it. I've been a Seamwork member since the beginning, so have printed out the Nolan Pants and bought some navy twill to make them up in. Seamwork have also released a video tutorial to accompany this pattern, so if you are a little apprehensive about making trousers it would be a great place to start!

Finally, I'm making the Patsy Overalls from Ready to Sew. I have never bought any of their patterns before, but their most recent collection really grabbed me. I'm starting with Patsy and then will move on to Papao next. The whole collection has no fastenings / notions other than thread, meaning they are easy to sew when it is difficult to pop to the shops for some buttons / the right length zip, etc etc.

The fabric I have chosen for Patsy is a dusky blue linen and I'm hoping I have enough left over to make a little top to go with my Sophia skirt - I haven't decided on a top pattern yet, it will depend how much fabric is left and what I can squeeze out of it! I've got a stripy orange t-shirt that will go really well with this fabric I think, and will add a bit of colour!

I'm looking forward to getting started (I need a break from mask sewing and work and home-schooling!) and I'll be back to post my finished makes!
